Orchards need careful maintenance to flourish. Who sets up, organises, pays for and monitors this work? A real danger of doing something that sounds nice but doesn’t work in practice

Taylor Wimpey support the approach to the provision of allotments, orchards and community gardens within new development. The Vision Document submitted in support of land north of Leamington Spa demonstrates how this can be delivered at the Site.
Taylor Wimpey would welcome the opportunity to review and comments on the future guidance referred to within Draft Policy Direction 43e.

Policy Direction 43e is supported but requires robust technical evidence to determine the need and appropriate provision of allotments, orchards, and community gardens.

allotments offer sustainable food production which is healthier and cheaper so benefit population health.
Health also benefitted by working on allotments - exercise for population.
Many allotments in south warwickshire are threatened to be built over by developers and need protecting.
NHS is also looking in some areas at providing 'prescriptions for gardening for health' - difficult if been built over.
Helps lower socio-economic groups to access orchards and gardening

Please refer to other comments made on this for other objectives. Community gardens, allotments and orchards should be prioritised as they are vital for biodiversity, human health and wellbeing and social interaction.

Yes, community food-growing is a good way of building community, and we need more allotments in Stratford.

We agree in principle with the approach laid out in Draft Policy Direction 43d but would like to see the policy set out an appropriate site area threshold which explains when developers will be required to provide space for food growing on a given site. We consider this to be an important consideration given that not all sites will be sufficiently large enough to provide a suitable area for food growing. Furthermore, to avoid the piecemeal delivery of new allotments, orchards, and community gardens the Councils should first prepare an overarching strategy to guide future delivery. The guide should not only set out details on the optimum size for new provision and design advice for their delivery, but should also highlight where new allotments are most needed, and what opportunities exist to expand and improve existing community allotments, via off-site financial contributions, as this is likely to be the preference in many cases.

This policy proposes that development provides space for growth through allotments, orchards and gardens however the policy does not set a threshold for what type and size of development should seek to provide this space, it is also not clear how much space will be required. We consider that the policy should be amended to provided more flexibility as not all development will be able to provide onsite allotments, orchards and/or community gardens and consideration on the impact on site capacity and viability is necessary.

Accessible green spaces are well understood to have therapeutic capacity in health and wellbeing terms and we believe that these should be protected and accessible. Access to healthy and nutritious food is not always available to all residents so every opportunity should be taken to develop community orchards and allotments and the management and distribution networks supporting these initiatives which also assist in supporting good health and wellbeing and develop relationships and community. We agree with Draft Policy Direction 43a, 43b, 43c, 43d & 43e.
In respect of parks with equipment, these should in our opinion be sited on all-weather surfaces, so they remain accessible and safe places for children to access year round. Unfortunately, where surfaces become boggy or inaccessible during the winter, this can lead to the loss of a useful bumping space for months on end, during which communities lose access to import opportunities to enable outdoor play for children and places for parents to meet and build community.
