We would like to see this section of the Core Strategy include proper emphasis on green infrastructure as well as the 'grey' infrastructure usually considered.

As regards funding, At the national ParkCity Conference in London last March (sponsored by Natural England and CABE) the then Minister for Housing & Planning Margaret Beckett stated that 'Section 106 has traditionally been the means of funding these projects. The new planning act also makes provision for a community infrastructure levy. Authorities can choose to make this charge to raise funds for investment in infrastructure. Given what we know about the benefits of public spaces, I'd expect to see that being invested in green infrastructure just as much as in traditional forms of infrastructure (http://www.communities.gov.uk/speeches/corporate/bitsbetweenbuildings) .

We would like to see the Preferred Option contain a commitment to providing accessible woodland and to using the Trust's Woodland Access Standard to inform this, particularly as part of green infrastructure delivery.

We are pleased to see the reference (paragraphs 16.2 & 16.3) to Parklands and Ancient Woodland, although the latter is also a crucial habitat for section 17 - Natural Environment. However we would also like to see ancient/veteran/notable trees considered within this section and protected as green monuments.

We therefore look forward to the Core Strategy including strategic policies that will protect, enhance and link the natural environment, including ancient woodland, in accordance with national and regional planning policy including the UK BAP priority habitats obligation.
We would therefore like to see expansion of the natural environment as a preferred option in this policy.
