We understand the aim has been to preserve the runway within these developments, and the specific and unique areas needed for helicopter training operations (in addition to the runway) should be viewed in the same light.

It is therefore proposed that in addition to adopting the aviation safeguarding in line with AS.9 within the new South Warwickshire local plan, reference is also included to preserve the required helicopter training and operating areas, so as to ensure the helicopter (and related) functions of the airfield can continue. Without this the airfield is not sustainable, nor are the helicopter operations.

The proposal to develop Wellesbourne airfield for B8 distribution and storage use will increase traffic and will not create material employment. Wellesbourne is becoming a dormitory village for residents to drive elsewhere to work. This is not sustainable. Any economic development of Wellesbourne airfield needs to focus on creating good quality jobs for the residents of Wellesbourne.

Aviation at Wellesbourne Airfield should not just be maintained but considerably enhanced. The airfield offers great opportunities for developing commercial activities related to aviation and hi-tech uses related to the local motor industry and Wellesbourne campus. None of the site should be used for general warehousing - this only adds to traffic problems and the existing warehousing operators struggle to get staff because of the high cost of housing and poor transport links. The existing runways should be retained and the very popular market should be guaranteed a future.

As part of the aim for NetZero we need to be reducing the amount of flying that is done unnecessarily, so this plan of cutting airfields down from three to one seems like a good move. Especially if it does permit the development of low carbon flying and aircraft development/maintenance at Wellesbourne. Things like aircraft electric charging points should be encouraged there. Brownfield use of Atherstone airfield is a good thing rather than building on green belt or farm land elsewhere, though I'd encourage housing around it too to ensure the workforce hasn't got to travel far for work.

With reference to Wellesbourne Airfield the aviation function must be retained in-line with existing Area Policy AS.9. in the adopted Stratford-on-Avon District Core Strategy. Both existing runways must be retained, 18/36 and 05/23. It is critically important to retain the airfields we have for the future. It is most unlikely that any new airfields would ever be built. The runways are perfectly aligned for the local weather conditions, and local development has taken their current location and use into account.

I wish Wellesbourne airfield to grow ,but not to be re-developed by Gladman‘s, it will be a smaller airfield, a realignment of the runway will mean that Loxley‘s noise sensitive area will be infringed or dangerous for planes to land. The loss of a second runway will mean all traffic would have to use this new approach. There will be a lot of pressure as there are fewer airfields, I’m happy to see extra usage but not at the cost of an infringement of Loxley‘s noise sensitive area , affecting residence quality of life lifestyles and mental health.

I agree that some industrial development could be made at Wellesbourne to provide employment. However. this would need to be limited and to be built in such a way as to not interfere with the current flying & aviation functions at the airfield. It is vitally important that the airfield should continue to operate and be allowed to expand as there is a lack of other operational airfields in Warwickshire and Wellesbourne is needed to train future pilots and to provide a place for business jets to land.

We strongly agree with the proposal to safeguard the aviation function of Wellesbourne airfield but it needs to be clearer what this means in practice i.e. capacity to deliver to the same volume/ type as currently otherwise it will be a watered down version (single runway/ no helicopters etc). Development of storage/ distribution capacity on the site will exacerbate road transport issues, specifically A429.
There appears to be a lack of synergy in the policies MIS.8/MIS.9 on pages 79 and 81 and this Policy 16. Clarification is needed.

The re-purpose of Wellesbourne Airfield needs very specialist attention. Current plans do not allow for safe flying. Wellesbourne is of national importance to the general aviation UK network. Coventry was released for the giga factory because Wellesbourne was operational. Any issues with Wellesbourne could potentially affect Coventry.
The market at the airfield is a major economic contributor.
