The green belt exists for a reason, namely to protect urban sprawl. The country has a sufficiency of housing stock even accounting for multi factorial population growth and appropriate uptake of this should be the emphasis, rather than deregulation of green belt land. Much of this land is also agricultural and as the UK is a net importer of food, it adds significantly to the risk of food insecurity and bioterrorism in due course.
