Since the Town and Country Planning Act allowed green belt proposals in development plans, green belt allocations have served the nation well. SG07 continues to fulfil the current stated purposes of green belt land:
• check the unrestricted sprawl of large built-up areas
• prevent neighbouring towns merging into one another
• assist in safeguarding the countryside from encroachment
• preserve the setting and special character of historic towns
• assist in urban regeneration, by encouraging the recycling of derelict and other urban land.
The Government attaches great importance to Green Belts. SG07 clearly meets all five of the criteria.
