Planning in South Warwickshire goes beyond physical development to create environments that support healthy lifestyles and inclusive, connected communities. The Local Plan recognises that where we live, work, and age profoundly affects our health and wellbeing.
The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) underscores the importance of creating places that promote health, safety, and inclusivity. Reflecting this, the SWLP authorities are committed to supporting development that encourages healthy living, reduces health inequalities, and builds strong, resilient communities.
The Local Plan will achieve these goals through:
1. Public transport and active travel: (Draft Policy 31).
2. Safe and Well-Designed Places: (Draft Policy 25).
3. Provision of community facilities and healthcare infrastructure: (Draft Policy 25).
4. Provision of access to green and open spaces: (Draft Policies 36-44).
5. Environmental Protection: (Draft Policies 31, 32, 36-49).
6. Climate Resilience: (Draft Policies d-k).
7. Quality, affordability and accessibility of housing: (Draft policy A and G, policy direction 10,22 and 25)
It may be helpful to provide further clarity on what constitutes a major development and offer direction on suitable HIA tools to use such as the HUDU or the WHIASU tools. WCC public health is happy to support in assessments of HIAs for large scale developments.
We recommend that developers use the London Healthy Urban Development Unit (HUDU) HIA tool as the SWLP authorities will liaise with Warwickshire Public Health in using the London Healthy Urban Development Unit (HUDU) in assessing HIA applications.
