Agree in principle but what is deemed adequate open space? Having seen a fair few open spaces within new developments that are now 20-25 years old and even new developments less than 2-3 years old they are very uninspiring in their design and attractiveness. More emphasis should be made on the open space with tree lined walkways to make it appealing to utilise. Just a blob of green space within a development does not work.

We do see a lot of development on "open space" at the moment. Just near me there are two large housing developments (the one around Shottery between the A46 and Evesham Road) and the Bishopton Lane site that have both been built on previously open space that was easy to access and walk across. Whilst there is some "open space" retained this is often in the form of flood alleviation ponds, which whilst good for biodiversity are of a different nature to the open space lost to the development. Not all open space is the same and interchangeable!

Improving access and accessibility to open space for all users should include equestrians. 88% of adult riders are women, 85% of children who ride horses are girls. Equestrian activity often spans a lifetime with examples of riders continuing well into their retirement years (recent example of 100yr old woman from Cirencester still riding and feels it is 1the best way to exercise') keeping them physically and mentally well. Equestrian activity is all year round (BETA, 2023).

Building 6700 houses in the proposed site at BW will obliterate any open space around as well as contribute to the further clogging up of adjacent areas. There is nowhere for this to be recovered as a result of this settlement, it really wil be a blot on the landscape with minimal benefits for anyone other than builders and shareholders who won’t be there to see the damage this will cause.

SDC should obtain commuted sums from developers of new housing to provide for their future maintenance. The use of Management Companies to maintain new open spaces should be discontinued.
The Council should ensure that all new open spaces are well designed and constructed by developers with suitable equipment and materials. Sports pitches should be required to be laid out to national standards to ensure that they are suitable for play by local clubs. There are many examples of new open spaces and pitches being left with uneven surfaces full of rubble and building materials and thus being unsuitable for use.
