The Heart of England Forest, whilst not specifically being designated a SLA, much of our land sits within the former Ancient Forest of Arden. Development next to or adjacent to these sites has the potential to negatively impact on wildlife that has established itself in the existing and recently created habitats. Development in and around such sites should be restricted with robust policies and be redirected to areas where the impact on nature would not be so significant.

The designation of the “Arden Special Landscape Area” was removed in the 2006 Warwick District Local Plan. The areas previously in this category should have their SLA designation restored and recognised in the Landscape Assessment. There should be no development in these areas as it would destroy the hedgerows and ancient oaks which give rise to a huge diversity of wildlife. Retaining them in isolation in any form of urban setting would destroy the corridors used by the wildlife to move within their territory.

SLAs have not been extended into Warwick district. Why is there an Arden SLA in Stratford district which stops at the Stratford/Warwick border? The SLA Arden designation needs to extend to Warwick district so that B1 is given some protection. B1 is disadvantaged in the current Sustainability Appraisal because of this anomaly.
The policy is far too vague in setting out what protection an area would receive. Any development, by definition, harms the landscape. To destroy a landscape of particular historic significance such as Arden - and particularly Ancient Arden - is appalling. What a legacy for future generations.

Whilst there is logic in maintaining Special Landscape Areas designations within Stratford District, we question their proposed introduction in Warwick District. If Warwick District had areas which warranted being designated as Special Landscape Areas, surely this would have happened in a previous version of their local plan. To simply apply such a policy designation because one exists in Stratford is therefore not supported.

Yes, the Cotswolds National Landscape (CNL) Board agrees with the approach outlined in Draft Policy Direction 47.
Two of the Special Landscape Areas (SLAs) are located directly adjacent to the CNL, as shown in the map below:
• Cotswold Fringe SLA (west, south and east of Shipston-on-Stour); and
• Ironstone Hill SLA (north east of the CNL).

• Black hatching = Cotswolds National Landscape
• Grey shading = CNL 3km buffer
The Cotswold Fringe SLA is located within the Cotswolds National Character Area (NCA 107)94 and reflects many of the characteristics of the CNL, particularly Landscape Character Type (LCT) 17 - Pastoral Lowland Vale95. The Ironstone Hill SLA shares many of the characteristics of the north-eastern extremities of the CNL, particularly LCT 6 - Ironstone Hills and Valleys96. The key difference is that the SLAs are areas of particularly high landscape quality at a local level whereas the CNL is an area of particularly high landscape quality at a national level.
The designation of these SLAs helps to conserve and enhance the setting of the CNL and, by extension, helps to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the CNL.

Special landscape areas – The National Trust properties located in Stratford-on-Avon District Council area are located within many of the designated special landscape areas which seek to protect, enhance, and facilitate better management of the best of the area's landscapes outside the Cotswolds National Landscape. The policy does this by resisting development proposals that would have a harmful effect on the distinctive character and appearance of the relevant SLA. Many of the National Trust properties in the South Warwickshire Local Plan area are integral to the character of such special landscapes and the special landscapes that they are found within contribute towards the special nature of these places.
The National Trust consider that there would be enormous benefit of the existing policy being applied to the whole of the South Warwickshire Local Plan area and would deliver considerable enhancements to the special landscape areas.

This approach is supported by West Northamptonshire Council. In determining the final boundaries for the SLA designations regard should be given to the SLA designations in West Northamptonshire which are contiguous with the SWLP plan area.
